Diego MENENDEZ de Codillero. Jose Jaime Longoria's transcription of the original document (the expediente approving passage of Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria to the New World) resulted in the following interpretations of the name as given by 3 different witnesses:
1) Diego [NDZ] de [Lodillero?]
2) Diego NDZ de codre_ero
3) Diego [NDZ?] [MEZ?] de [Codillero?]

Because the Archives of the Indies shows the daughter's name as Inez Rodriguez I initially assumed that her father's name was Diego Rodriguez de Codillero.

However, Alonso de la Pontiga testified in a lawsuit in 1593 that his wife was a sister of his stepmother Francisca Melendez de Valdes. It is possible the transcribed abbreviations NDZ or MEZ could stand for Melendez, Menendez or Mendez. [See also my narrative for Inez Menedez de Valdez, wife of Alonso de la Pontiga.] Fellow researchers and I are in the process of reviewing transcripted documents and original documents in an attempt to verify that Inez was indeed a Menendez, and that her father would then be Diego Menendez de Codillero..

It should also be noted that there is a consejo in Asturias named Cudillero; it borders the eastern side of the consejo of Valdes.

Spouse: Catalina de VALDES. Diego MENENDEZ de Codillero and Catalina de VALDES were married. Children were: Inez MENENDEZ de Valdes.

Inez MENENDEZ de Valdes was born in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. In November 1593, during his testimony in a criminal lawsuit, Alonso de la Pontiga referred to Francisca Melendez de Valdes as his "stepmother", and also as the sister of his wife. The latter reference is confusing because Alonso's wife, according to the Index at the Archivo de las Indias, was named Ines Rodriguez de Valdes. [At another point during the trial her name was given as Francisca Mendez de Valdes.]

A possible explanation is that Alonso used the word "sister" instead of "sister-in-law" or "half-sister" to identify the relationship of his step-mother Francisca and his wife Ines. This would explain the different surnames.

But, it is also possible they were blood sisters, in which case a possible explanation for the different surnames might be human error in transcribing a document relating to Ines. Surnames are frequently abbreviated in documents with "Rdz" for Rodriguez and "Mdz" for Menendez, Melendez, or Mendez; a faulty transcription would explain the different surnames for Francisca and Ines. Our own transcription of the original document (thanks to Jose Jaime Longoria) found that Inez's surname was abbreviated as either Mez or Ndz. It is my belief that the correct surname would probably be Menendez since it was the name of a family well established in the area at the time.

Interestingly, in his own will Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria named his mother simply as Ines de Valdes, which offers no clue as to whether Ines was a Rodriguez or a Menendez. Fellow researchers and I are in the process of reviewing transcripted documents and original documents in an attempt to verify that Inez was indeed a Menendez.
