Francisca MELENDEZ DE VALDES. In November 1593, during his testimony in a criminal lawsuit, Alonso de la Pontiga referred to Francisca Melendez de Valdes as his "stepmother".

Juan Uria Maqua, in his book "Alonso de Bello", describes a complicated transaction concluded in 1619 in which Alonso de Bello acquired various properties, including the Casa de Longoria in the village of Llongoria, from Alvaro Menendez de Miranda, who had inherited them from his sister Francisca Menendez. I believe this Francisca Menendez is the same person as Francisca Melendez de Valdes.

Documents discovered in the Real Audiencia y Chancelleria de Valladolid by Matthew Hovious, researcher for the PBS documentary "Faces of America, relate to a criminal lawsuit in 1593 and a civil lawsuit in 1598 involving a plot of land owned by Francisca Melendez de Valdes. Alonso de la Pontiga testified during those trials that the disputed plot of land had been given to Francisca Melendez de Valdes in repayment of her dowry after she was widowed from Pedro de Longoria. It seems to me that other properties likely were deeded to Francisca in repayment of her dowry, including the Casa de Longoria in Llongoria.

The facts, circumstantial though they may be, seem to establish that the Francisca Menendez mentioned by Juan Uria Maqua in his book is the same person as Francisca Melendez de Valdes, widow of Pedro de Longoria.

The marriage investigation for Nicolas Ochoa de Elejalde and Margarita Garcia de Avila (#49-14, page 216, conducted on October 25, 1711) notes that Nicolas Ochoa de Elejalde was a widower of Margarita de las Casas (aka Maria Rita de las Casas) and further notes that Margarita was his second wife. However, the marriage investigation for Nicolas Ochoa de Elejalde and Maria Rita de las Casas (#39-16, page 170, conducted on January 15, 1697) notes that Nicolas was a widower of Luzgarda de Medina, implying that Maria Rita de las Casas was Nicolas' third wife. A possible explanation is that Luzgarda de Medina and Josepha Mendez Tovar were the same person. Parents: Capt. Joseph MENDEZ Tovar and Leonor GONZALEZ (aka Leonor Gutierrez Hidalgo).
