In "I Would Rather Sleep in Texas, A History of the Rio Grande Valley & The People of the Santa Anita Land Grant", published in 2003 by the Texas State Historical Association, Austin, Texas, the authors Mary Margaret McAllen Amberson, James A. McAllen and Margaret H. McAllen write:

"...The Rangers continued to search for the men who attacked the San Juanito. Two days after the raid, on the road to Guadalupe el Torrero, two miles west of the San Juanito, the Rangers spotted Antonio L. Longoria and Jesus Bazan talking on the road. Though the two men were well thought of in the area and had no role in the raid at the San Juanito, the Rangers mistook Longoria for Eugenio Longoria, el Mazo, who was on their list as a suspect. They shot the two men instantly and left them on the road to die. El Mazo was nowhere nearby. The Rangers made no excuses."..."Longoria's and Bazan's bodies lay in the road for three to four days. People felt sympathy but lacked the courage to claim the bodies, fearing the same fate would befall anyone who tried to come forth and bury them. The wagon traffic on the dirt road drove around the bodies. Finally, Timotea Cantu, the wife of Don Martiriano Cantu, a rancher who lived nearby, had graves dug and the bodies buried."

Note that this would place his birth year almost exactly between the birthdates of the two Census entries for 1900. Pilar is enumerated twice in the 1900 Census.

First, he is shown on June 7, 1900 in Justice Precinct 6 as a 52-year old born October 1849 with wife 53-year old Tomasa Alvarado (born June 1846) with children Carlos (born Nov. 1874), Albina (born Mar 1881), and Santos (female born Nov. 1885). They are shown as having 6 children, only 3 of which were living at the time. This census also shows as members of his household a 2-year old nephew named Pablo Salinas and a 2-year old granddaughter named Luisa Salinas.

Second, he is enumerated on June 15, 1900 in Justice Precinct 1 as a 38-year old born May 1862 and married to 35-year old wife Tomasa (born Oct 1864) for 15 years with sons Pilar (born April 1888) and Alvino (born March 1894). They are shown as having been married for 15 years with 5 children (no mention of the other 3), all of whom are still living.

The 1880 Census listed a Pilar Bazan born in 1857 with wife Tomasa and children Carlos and Luis. This Tomasa would have to be Tomasa Alvarado. Parents: Bernardino BAZAN and Maria Petra VILLARREAL Garza.
