Salomon PENA Lopez was born about 1810. His age was given as 45 in the 1860 Census, indicating a birth date around 1815. However, 10 years later in the 1870 Census, his age is shown as 50 (difficult to read, it could be 58), which would indicate a birth date around 1820 (if age was 58, then birth date could be 1812). Josefina Vera, in her "Memories from La Grulla on the Rio Grande", states that Salomon Pena was captured by the Indians perhaps around 1815 when he was a young boy, indicating a birth date of perhaps 1810. Considering that Lucas Longoria, after being captured by the Apaches in 1835, referred to Salomon Pena as an "old man", my best guess is that he was born about 1810. Salomon Pena was captured by Apache Indians when he was just a young boy. He was captured, perhaps sometime around the year 1815, from the Rancho Garcia, which was located just to the north of Camargo. This was probably in Porcion 78, or perhaps Porcion 76. He lived with the Apaches for many years and even took an Apache woman as his wife. He was living among the Apache in 1835 when they brought another young captive, Lucas Longoria, into their camp. Salomon Pena, or Suadero (Wormy Saddle Blanket) as he was called by the Apaches, befriended Lucas Longoria and became his mentor in teaching him the ways of the Apache. Eventually, in 1849, he helped Lucas escape but apparently did not leave with him because he still had his Apache wife. Some years later, Salomon also returned home and eventually married Antonia Juarez.
Apparently, he lost his hearing sometime later; the 1860 Census indicates that Salomon Pena was deaf.

I am thus assuming her name was Maria Juana de Perales but that she also went by Juana Fernandez, using her mother's surname.
