He was first elected as a Representative to the Texas State House in 1960 and served until 1973 when he was elected as a State Senator representing the Rio Grande Valley. In 1979 he gained fame and notoriety as a member of the "Killer Bees", a group of 12 state senators who protested a bill helping Texas Governor John Connally run for President of the United States. The Killer Bees hid out for 13 days in an Austin garage apartment in an effort to kill the bill. He served as State Senator until 1981 when he was elected to the State District Court in Hidalgo County; he served as District Judge for 13 years until his retirement in 1994. The marriage record has no last name for her mother Marcela; however, Ancestry.com shows her father's name as Juan Longoria Garza. There is a high probability that Rita Longoria was the daughter of Juan Jose Longoria and Marcela Ramirez.

On page 59 of the book "Gobierno de Estado de Nuevo Leon, Archivo General del Estado, Protocolos, Catalogos 3 y 4", by Bartolome Garcia, is the following notation:

"Poder especial: Maria Rita Longoria y Ramirez a favor de su esposo Ventura de Alcala para que lo represente, reciba e intervenga en la faccion de inventarios que como heredera le corresponde por muerte de sus padres; estos se practicaran en la ciudad y puerto de Matamoros, 23-VIII-1849, Monterrey, N.L., F. 93-94".

This document indicates that her mother's last name was Ramirez and further solidifies my belief that this Rita Longoria was the daughter of Juan Jose Longoria and Marcela Ramirez.

The 1850 Census of Cameron County, Texas, shows that Maria Rita, wife of Ventura Alcala, was 27 years old, indicating a birth date of 1823, which agrees very closely with the age given in the marriage record.

NOTE: Herb Canales, whose great-great-great-grandmother was Maria Rita Longoria, has confirmed that Maria Rita's mother was indeed Marcela Ramirez. Herb has a copy of the original baptismal entry dated June 7, 1821, and it gives the names of Maria Rita's parents as Juan Jose Longoria and Marcela Ramirez.
