Gilberto Hinojosa remembered hearing the names Eudoro, Teresa and Gertrudis as being siblings of Jesus Alcala and related some humorous stories that he heard about "Tio Doro". Basilio ALCALA Flores^226,233,234 was born in 1870 in Santander Jimenez, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He was christened on 28 October 1871 in Santander Jimenez, Tamaulipas, Mexico.²²⁹ He died on 27 February 1921 at the age of 51 at Las Trasquilas Ranch in Cameron County, Texas. Basilio was buried on 28 February 1921 in City Cemetery, Brownsville, TX, USA.
Basilio Alcala owned and lived on a ranch in Jimenez, Tamaulipas, Mexico but was forced to flee Jimenez during the Mexican Revolution. Revolutionaries during that time were killing the landowners and confiscating their properties to redistribute to the poorer people who until then had not owned any land. Basilio Alcala, his father Jesus Alcala, and Basilio's eldest son Jesus Alcala (the 2nd), were all marked for death by the revolutionaries. The only recourse for the three men was to flee from Mexico.

Basilio Alcala apparently concluded that the safest recourse for his immediate family was to emigrate to the United States. United Staates Border Crossing records indicate that Basilio, his wife Donaciana, and their then seven children first crossed into Brownsville, Texas on August 24, 1915. This must have been in preparation for their eventual relocation because family oral history believes that Basilio and his son Jesus returned to Jimenez but the rest of the family remained in Matamoros for their safety. Records show that Basilio would again cross into Brownsville almost two yeas later, on October 1, 1917, but this time he crossed alone. A year later, on October 4, 2018, he again crossed into Brownsville; this time he was accompanied by his son Guadalupe. Records show his eldest son Jesus crossing into Brownsville alone on January 21, 1919. Finally, on April 10, 1919, Basilio's wife Donaciana made the final crossing into Brownsville with the remainder of her children: Delia, Jose, Beatriz, Josefa, Mauro and 13-month old Maria de los Angeles who was born in Matamoros.

The timeline established by the Border Crossing records is in accord with family oral history. Having returned to Jimenez after their initial visit to Brownsville on August 24, 1915, Basilio with his eldest son Jesus and Basilio's father Jesus were finally forced to flee to save their lives. Aided by Basilio's 2nd cousin Fiacro Betancourt, they first fled south to the port of Tampico sometime in 1916. Jesus Alcala was then probably in his mid-60's, Basilio Alcala was around 45, and Jesus Alcala (the 2nd) was about 18 years of age. Once in Tampico, the three men dressed in women's clothing and boarded a ship bound for either Galveston, Texas or New Orleans, Lousiana. Family oral history is uncertain as to the exact destination of the ship, but my guess is that is was New Orleans because the 1920 U.S. Census showed Fiacro Betancourt and his family living in New Orleans. Whether it was Galveston or New Orleans, they stayed there for about one year, with Basilio and his son Jesus finding jobs working for a railroad. The elder Jesus, Basilio's father, worked as a "water boy" taking water to the cotton pickers in the cotton fields.

After things had cooled down in Mexico, they moved back to Brownsville, Texas probably early in 1918. Basilio's father Jesus eventually went back to Jimenez but Basilio's wife and remaining family continued living in Matamoros, across the Rio Grande River from Brownsville. Donaciana and her children finally joined her husband and sons in Brownsville in April 1919 where they established their permanent residence.

After arriving in Brownsville, Basilio Alcala worked several jobs, primarily in the sugar cane and cotton fields and eventually became a foreman, whose duties included weighing the cotton. But in 1921, he suddenly became very ill after drinking some coffee, developing stomach pains and a fever, and died. Family members believe that someone poisoned his coffee, probably because they wanted the position he held in the cotton fields. Of course, these were only suspicions and, the times being what they were, no investigation was ever made.

A small part of the legacy of Basilio Alcala can be seen by driving along Southmost Road in Brownsville. The tall palm trees lining the road today were planted by Basilio Alcala and others. Parents: Jose Sostenes de Jesus ALCALA Garza and Leonor FLORES Manriques.
