Juan de ZALDIVAR. A Basque native from Vitoria, Juan de Zaldivar served as a junior officer in Coronado's army that in 1540 embarked on a search for the seven cities of gold in Cibola, marching across parts of the future states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Parents: Ruy Diaz de ZALDIVAR and Maria Perez de ONATE.


Juan de ZALDIVAR was born about 1569. He died in November 1598 in Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. Juan de Zaldivar was the second in command (maese de campo, or field marshall) in Juan de Onate's expedition to New Mexico. In November 1598, he and 14 companions were killed at the Acoma pueblo (New Mexico) after being ambushed by the residents of the pueblo. His brother Vicente avenged his death in January 1599 by attacking Acoma and laying it to waste. Parents: General Vicente de ZALDIVAR and Magdalena de MENDOZA y Salazar.

Mariana de ZALDIVAR (aka Mariana or Maria Ana de Sosa) died after 1701 in Salinas Victoria, New Spain. On April 6, 1695, Mariana de Sosa, widow of Diego Garcia de Quintanilla, sold the part of the Hacienda de Catalina that her husband had inherited from his parents, Captain Lucas Garcia and Juliana de Quintanilla. She sold her share of the Hacienda because each of her six children would inherit only a small piece of the hacienda, pieces too small to use effectively. The sale price was 210 pesos; it was bought by Blas de Arrechederra y Gallarreta, a merchant and mayor of Monterrey, and his wife Maria Gonzales Hidalgo.

In the transaction noted above, Mariana de Sosa states that Pedro de Longoria and Agustina are the parents of Diego, Jose and Maria. Parents: Capt. Vicente de ZALDIVAR y Ressa and Maria de SOSA.

Vicente de ZALDIVAR died before 1650. Capt. Vicente de Zaldivar was an officer of Juan de Onate in his expedition to New Mexico. He led several side expeditions from their base in New Mexico. One expedition was to the buffalo plains east of the Pecos in September 1598. Another was to the southwest of New Mexico.

In November 1598, Vicente's brother, Juan de Zaldivar, and 14 companions were killed at the Acoma pueblo (New Mexico) after being ambushed by the residents of the pueblo. Vicente avenged his brother's death in January 1599 by attacking Acoma and laying it to waste.

In 1602, Vicente Zaldivar went to Spain to secure a confirmation of Juan de Onate's titles and to secure a force of 300 men with whom to continue exploration beyond Quivira. Parents: General Vicente de ZALDIVAR and Magdalena de MENDOZA y Salazar.
