About nine years after marrying Henry I the Fowler, her husband was chosen to be King of Germany, succeeding King Conrad. In her position as Queen, Matilda helped the oppressed and the unfortunate and was very humble and pious. After her husband died, she inherited all his possessions. Matilda wanted Henry, her favorite son, to succeed his father as King of Germany, but Henry I had let it be known that he wished the eldest and first-born son Otto to succeed him. Otto was elected and crowned King on August 8, 936, but his brother Henry soon revolted against him. Henry did not succeed in overthrowing his brother and finally submitted to his brother, who named him Duke of Bavaria. The two brothers then turned on their mother, accusing her of impoverishing the crown through her excessive and generous treatment of their subjects. Matilda turned over all her inherited possessions to try to placate her sons and retired to her villa at Engern. The brothers however fell on hard times and soon called her back begged her to pardon them. Matilda was responsible for building many churches and monasteries, including the monasteries at Quedlinburg, Nordhausen, Engern and Poehlden. She died at the convents of St. Servatius and St. Dionysius at Quedlinburg, and was buried there beside her husband. Immediately after her death, she was venerated as a saint.
