He was one of the Captains in the expedition which discovered and conquered New Mexico. While in New Mexico, Alonso de Sosa Albornoz asked for and received permission from Juan de Onate to return to Nueva Viscaya because he could not provide for the needs of his family, who had accompanied him to New Mexico. Before he could return, however, he was stabbed to death by Vicente de Zaldivar and several other men. This apparently was to keep other settlers from deciding to abandon the colony in New Mexico. Her name was obtained from the "expediente", or proceeding, to approve the passage of Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria to the New World; the "expediente" noted the names of Lorenzo's paternal grandparents and his maternal grandparents. However, the old style Spanish writing was very difficult to read and I am unsure if the transcription of her name as Catalina is correct. Spouse: Pedro de LONGORIA. On page 11, Libro de Defunciones de Mazapil, Zacatecas 1667-1693, Joseph de Longoria is listed as having died on October 1, 1689. However, on page 41 of the transcription of the Protocolos de Mazapil the statement is made that Joseph de Longoria, husband of Elena de Aldaco, had already died by early 1661. Because the protocolos are listed in sequence by date I believe the 1661 death date is more likely. He was originally from Saltillo. Spouse: Elena Flores de ALDACO. Joseph SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Elena Flores de ALDACO were married after December 15, 1655 in Mazapil, New Spain. Joseph SUAREZ DE LONGORIA was born before March 22, 1615 in Mexico City, Mexico. Parents: Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Maria de URDINOLA y LOYS. Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA was born in Asturias, Spain. From the "expediente", or document granting Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria permission to travel to Nueva Espana, Pedro Suarez de Longoria is identified as an uncle of Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria. This indicates he was a brother of Alonso de la Pontiga. In addition, during testimony in a civil lawsuit in 1593, Alonso de la Pontiga testified that he had a brother named Pedro de Longoria. Since Alonso de la Pontiga's mother was a Suarez, I believe this Pedro de Longoria is the same person as Pedro Suarez de Longoria. The testimony during the 1593 lawsuit indicated that Pedro was a cleric in holy orders, and during a subsequent lawsuit in 1598 it was stated that Pedro was studying at the Colegio de San Pelayo in Salamanca. Pedro Suarez de Longoria was named Oidor of Audencia in Mexico City and travelled to New Spain in June 1603 to assume his post. Coming with him as a servant boy was 11-year old Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria, the progenitor of many of the Longorias from South Texas and northern Mexico. Pedro Suarez de Longoria was apparently removed as Oidor some years later, for reasons I am still researching but which probably had to do with improprieties in his official position. He is known to have married and fathered children, but it is not known whether he never actually became a member of the clergy or was a member of the clergy who subsequently left it. Additional research is needed. Parents: Pedro de LONGORIA and Catalina SUAREZ. Spouse: Maria de URDINOLA y LOYS. Pedro SUAREZ DE LONGORIA and Maria de URDINOLA y LOYS were married.
