Jose del Pilar ZARATE Y BAYARENA was born in 1803 in "el Potrero", Camargo. The "La Alameda" tract was granted by Mexico to Pilar Zarate y Bayarena on December 15, 1835. It comprised 13,132 acres (3 sitios). Gil Zarate y Bayarena also applied for a patent for this land. Witnesses testified that the land had been occupied and the patent was granted August 11, 1881.
Although the La Alameda tract was granted only to one person, Pilar Zarate y Bayarena, it was apparently jointly owned by Pilar, his brother Juan Manuel and his brother-in-law Francisco Elizondo. This is based on a statement made by Pilar Zarate y Bayarena on December 22, 1835 9 (see http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/tslac/40067/tsl-40067.html) in which he stated that all three paid equal parts for the land and each owned one sitio of the grant. Jose Gil ZARATE Y BAYARENA died between 1850 and 1860. Gil Zarate was the Original Grantee of the "La Blanca" tract comprising 22,140 acres (5 leagues) in Brooks and Hidalgo counties, south of present day Rachal, Texas. "La Blanca" was granted by Mexico on November 25, 1835. Gil Zarate y Bayarena (undoubtedly a relative, or perhaps descendant, of Gil Zarate) applied for a patent with the Texas General Land Office, but the patent was not recommended after hearing the testimony of witnesses. The witnesses stated that the grantee had occupied the land by beginning a settlement, but that they made very little improvements and abandoned the land a short time later, never having established a permanent settlement.
