Jose Antonio DE LA GARZA^1206,1225 was the Original Grantee of "El Tahuachal" in Matamoros, Nuevo Santander, New Spain in 1784.¹⁴⁵⁰ The El Tahuachal tract was between Falconeño tract (now known as Las Rucias) on its eastern boundary and the El Potrero tract on its western boundary. It is located west of the present day city of Matamoros and extended about 6 leagues south from the Rio Grande River. He signed a will on 9 September 1794 in Camargo, Nuevo Santander, New Spain.¹⁴⁵¹ Originally from Santa Catarina near Monterrey, he was a resident of Camargo and one of the 14 original founders of the "congregacion" named San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos about 20 miles upstream from the mouth of the Rio Grande River; the "congregacion" grew into the city known today as Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico.

In his will, he declared that he had been granted by the King of Spain a piece of land bordering on the "ejidos" to the south of Camargo and that the grant consisted of 11 "cordeladas". This undoubtedly is Porcion 19. This porcion is noted in New Guide to Spanish and Mexican Land Grants in South Texas as being granted to "...Jose Antonio Garza, formerly a servant, who had accumulated sufficient stock of his own to merit a grant of land".

He also declared that he owned with his son-in-law Luis Antonio Garcia a piece of land "en la costa" that was situated between the land owned by Capt. Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon on one side and the land owned by Ramon Longoria on the opposite side. This obviously refers to the land he owned at San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos, or present day Matamoros, Mexico.

Since Capt. Jose Antonio de la Garza Falcon was a large land owner in Camargo, having been granted two porciones, and is known to have had slaves, it is quite likely that Jose Antonio de la Garza had been a servant in the Captain's household.
