Francisco de URDINOLA^264,265 was born about 1552 in Valle de Oyarzun, Guipuzcoa, Spain.¹⁰⁰⁴ Garmendia Leal mentions the wedding of Capt. Francisco de Urdinola and Leonor Lopez de Loys on June 24, 1586, and further states that he was about 34 years old at the time, which would make his birth year approximately 1552.

On page 54, Garmendia Leal mentions the will of Capt. Francisco de Urdinola, dated June 16, 1617, in which Francisco de Urdinola states that he was originally from "Valle de Oyarzum, de la provincial de Guipuscoa, en los reinos de castilla". Guipuzcoa is in the Basque region of Spain. He died on 5 March 1618 at the age of 66.²⁶⁴ In 1582, Francisco de Urdinola was named Captain of Mazapil, replacing due to illness Capt. Alonzo Lopez de Loys. Four years later, Alonzo Lopez de Loys became his father-in-law when the 34 year old Francisco married 14 year old Leonor Lopez de Loys.

From 1583 to the 1590's, Francisco de Urdinola was granted and acquired vast landholdings in Nueva Viscaya. Eventually, his landholdings extended from Cuatro Cienegas in the north to Zacatecas on the south, and from Parras in the west (including the Haciendas of Bonanza, Cedros, Mazapil and Santa Elena) to the boundaries of the states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila on the east. His landholdings totaled several million acres. His principal Hacienda was San Francisco de los Patos (today known as General Cepeda, located about 30 miles west of Saltillo).

In 1594, he was asked by Viceroy Don Luis de Velasco II to negotiate a contract to lead the expedition to conquer and settle the lands known today as the state of New Mexico, United States. This was after the first applicant for the project to settle New Mexico, another large land owner in Nueva Viscaya named Juan Lomas y Colmenares, was rejected by the King of Spain because of his outrageous demands. However, Francisco de Urdinola was soon accused of killing his wife and several servants; some historians contend that the accusations were instigated by Juan Lomas y Colmenares in hopes of sabotaging Urdinola's application for the New Mexico project and resurrecting his own ambitions. The trial of Urdinola did indeed end his hopes of leading the New Mexico project even though he was eventually found innocent. While Urdinola was enduring his legal difficulties, Juan de Oñate was selected to lead the New Mexico project and eventually became known as the Conqueror of New Mexico.

Francisco de Urdinola was not through, however, and was named Governor of Nueva Viscaya in 1603 and remained in that post until 1615, extending his landholdings even more during that period. Parents: Juanes de URDINOLA and Isabel de NUMBIDE ECHENAGUIZAR.

Francisco de URDINOLA^{264,3038,3039} was born before 10 May 1606 in Mexico City, Mexico. He was baptized on 10 May 1606 in Mexico City, Mexico. Born in Mexico City circa 1606, Francisco de Urdinola y Longoria apparently went to Asturias sometime before 1626, probably to settle his father's estate in Asturias. In December 1626 Francisco petitioned the authorities in Madrid on behalf of Alonso de Bello requesting certification of Alonso de Bello's "hidalguia". In April 1630 Francisco signed a power of attorney in Lorero before the scribe Toribio Alvarez, giving his age as 23 years old. And in September 1632 Francisco signed a document in Lorero acknowledging receipt of his father's inheritance from the estate's administrator Pedro de Longoria de Laneo. I have not yet determined where this Pedro de Longoria de Laneo fits into my Longoria family tree.

Isabel de Urdinola lived with her first husband in Rio Grande, Zacatecas; upon her second marriage she moved to live in Parras y Patos; upon the death of her second husband she went to live in Hacienda de Bonanza.

She made her last will and testament on October 22, 1660, and left the Hacienda San Francisco de los Patos, Hacienda de la Castanuela and Hacienda de la Carbonera to her two granddaughters Francisca de Valdes and Maria de Alcega y Urdinola. Parents: Francisco de URDINOLA and Leonor Lopez de LOYS.

Maria de Duran was married to Francisco Sanchez, son of Juan Sanchez and Maria de la Barrera; Maria de Duran was also a second cousin of Juana de la Garza by virtue of her mother Catalina de Treviño being an illegitimate child of Joseph de Treviño, brother of Juana de la Garza's grandmother. The degree of relationship with Juana de la Garza is not the same for Maria de Uzcanga and Maria Duran but it is similar enough to warrant further research.

Because Alonso de la Pontiga, Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria, and all 3 witnesses all gave the name of Lorenzo's mother as Inez Valdes I am assuming that Inez's mother's name was Catalina de Valdes.
