He further names Lorenzo as his natural son and Luisa as his natural daughter. Assuming that Ana de Benavides completed her pregnancy and safely delivered her child there would be 11 children of Joseph de Ayala: 9 legitimate and 2 natural. For reasons explained below, there is a possibility that there were really 10 legitimate children and 2 natural children. In the Index to the Marriage Investigations of the Diocese of Guadalajara there are references to 8 children of Joseph de Ayala: Catalina, Maria, Nicolas, Josefa, Margarita, Antonia, Francisca and Luisa. The daughters named Maria and Antonia definitely appear to be two different persons so it may be that the transcription of Joseph de Ayala's testament may have a slight error and that there should be a comma between Maria and Antonia, designating two different persons. If I make the assumption of a transcription error noted above, then the Testament and the Marriage Investigations are in agreement on the names of 6 children: Josefa, Catalina, Maria, Antonia, Margarita and Luisa. The Marriage Investigations have 2 names not mentioned in the Testament: Nicolas and Francisca. The Testament has 5 names not found in the Marriage Investigations: Joseph, Agustina, Micaela, Juana and Lorenzo. The Marriage Investigations indicate that Nicolas was a legitimate son so I am assuming he is the same person as the Joseph mentioned in the Testament. I am further assuming that Francisca was the child born after the Testament was made, since her name is not to be found in his Testament.
