Rosario ALTAMIRA was born in December 1835 in Cienega de Mata, Mexico. According to El Mesteno, her death certificate gives her date of birth as December 1835. However, in an article published in the Falfurrias Facts on March 21, 1940, about two weeks before she died, Rosario stated that she did not know exactly when she was born. The article also states that there is no birth record available. In the interview, Rosario claimed she was a girl of 16 or 17 when she watched Zachary Taylor lead his American expeditionary force into Mexico in 1846 during the Mexican War. Thus, she would have been born about 1830. The 1870 Census of Hidalgo County, Texas, Precints 3 and 4, gave her age as 23, indicating she would have been born about 1847. The birth certificate would obviously be the most reliable source for her birth date. She died on April 4, 1940 in Encino, Brooks County, TX, USA. She was well known in Encino and other parts of Brooks County, Texas, as a "curandera", or one who used home remedies to cure the sick. Parents: Trinidad ALTAMIRA and Guadalupe FLORES.
