He was wounded by shrapnel on March 21, 1945 in a battle near Frankfurt, Germany. He rejoined his unit after surgery in London and witnessed the end of the war in Europe at Klatovy, Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, several campaign medals, and the victory WWII medal.
