Cristobal ONATE was born in 1552 in Zacatecas, New Spain. Cristobal may have been the twin brother of Juan. Parents: Gov. Cristobal de ONATE and Catalina de SALAZAR.

Gov. Cristobal de ONATE was born in 1504. He died on October 6, 1567. In 1524, Cristobal de Onate came to New Spain after becoming assistant to Rodrigo de Albornoz, the newly appointed accountant of the royal treasury of New Spain. Eventually, he became the confidant of Beltran Nuno de Guzman, the president of New Spain's first Audiencia. Guzman was cruel to the Indians that the Council of the Indies prepared to dismiss him from office. To regain favor and reputation, Guzman decided to embark on the conquest of lands to the northwest of Mexico City. Cristobal de Onate was one of those who participated in this conquest and the subsequent creation of the province of Nueva Galicia. Cristobal was one of the founders of Culiacan (where in 1536 Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca finally stumbled into Spanish soldiers, after wandering all the way from Texas) and the key individual in the founding of Guadalajara. In the 1530's, he also headed an army detachment that explored the future Mexican state of Durango. In 1540, Cristobal invested in the expedition of Coronado to find the "seven cities of gold" in the American southwest.
Cristobal's son, Juan de Onate, was the conqueror of Nuevo Mexico, and established the first Spanish settlement in the future state of New Mexico. In 1546, Cristobal de Onate formed an association with Juan de Tolosa, Miguel de Ibarra, and Miguel's nephew Diego de Ibarra, all fellow Basques from the province of Guipuzcoa, to prospect for precious metals. In September of 1546, an expedition led by Juan de Tolosa discovered a silver deposit at the base of a cliff, which they called La Bufa. This became one of the largest silver discoveries ever made in North America and also became the site of a new town called Zacatecas, officially founded on January 20, 1548, by Cristobal de Onate, Juan de Tolosa, Diego de Ibarra and their new partner Baltazar Temino de Banuelos from Castile. Cristobal and Diego de Ibarra eventually built their homes about 5 miles north of Zacatecas, at a mining site called Panuco. Parents: Juan Perez de ONATE and Osana GONZALEZ.

Spouse: Catalina de SALAZAR. Gov. Cristobal de ONATE and Catalina de SALAZAR were married in 1549 or 1550 in Mexico City, New Spain. The noted historian, Donald Chipman, believes that Catalina's first husband, Ruy Diaz de Mendoza, was not dead when Catalina married Cristobal de Onate. The evidence indicates that Catalina may have deserted her first husband and gone back to her family in Mexico City, where she married Cristobal de Onate and became a bigamist. Cristobal de ONATE was born about 1590. He died in 1612. He was christened with the name Cristobal de Naharriondo Perez Onate y Cortes Moctezuma. His father Juan de Onate took Cristobal with him on his expedition to New Mexico and commissioned him with the rank of Lieutanant even though he was only 8 years old at the time. Juan de ONATE. Juan de Onate followed his brother to the New World, arriving about 1631. He associated himself with the notorious Betran Nuno de Guzman, who in 1528 was appointed President of the Audencia in New Spain, the governing body for New Spain following the removal of Hernan Cortez from power. Juan de Onate participated in many of Nuno de Guzman's cruel torture and slaughter of the native Indians. When Nuno de Guzman's deeds were exposed he was removed from power and brought to trial; but Juan de Onate escaped to Peru where he died in disgrace. Parents: Juan Perez de ONATE and Osana GONZALEZ.

Juan de ONATE was born in 1552 in Zacatecas, New Spain. Juan and Cristobal may have been twin brothers. He died about June 3, 1626 in Guadalcanal, Spain. Juan de Onate was the conqueror of Nuevo Mexico, and established the first Spanish settlement in the future state of New Mexico. Parents: Gov. Cristobal de ONATE and Catalina de SALAZAR.
