Diego MENENDEZ de Codillero²⁴³³ was born (date unknown). Jose Jaime Longoria's transcription of the original document (the expediente approving passage of Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria to the New World) resulted in the following interpretations of the name as given by 3 different witnesses:
1) Diego [NDZ] de [Lodillero?]
2) Diego NDZ de codre_ero
3) Diego [NDZ?] [MEZ?] de [Codillero?]

Because the Archives of the Indies shows the daughter's name as Inez Rodriguez I initially assumed that her father's name was Diego Rodriguez de Codillero.

However, Alonso de la Pontiga testified in a lawsuit in 1593 that his wife was a sister of his stepmother Francisca Melendez de Valdes. It is possible the transcribed abbreviations NDZ or MEZ could stand for Melendez, Menendez or Mendez. [See also my narrative for Inez Menedez de Valdez, wife of Alonso de la Pontiga.] Fellow researchers and I are in the process of reviewing transcripted documents and original documents in an attempt to verify that Inez was indeed a Menendez, and that her father would then be Diego Menendez de Codillero..

It should also be noted that there is a consejo in Asturias named Cudillero; it borders the eastern side of the consejo of Valdes.

Inez MENENDEZ de Valdes²⁵⁴⁸ was born in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. In November 1593, during his testimony in a criminal lawsuit, Alonso de la Pontiga stated that he was married to a sister of Francisca Menendez [other witnesses gave her name as Francisca Menendez de Valdes]. This implies that Alonso de la Pontiga's wife was a Menedez but that is inconsistent with the reference in the Index at the Archivo de las Indias, which named Alonso de la Pontiga's wife as Ines Rodriguez de Valdes.

A possible explanation is that Ines, or Inez, used her mother's surname but testimony during the 1593 lawsuit revealed that Francisca Menendez' mother was named Catalina de Valdes.

Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria made his own last will and testament on July 25, 1665, but it does not settle the issue. Lorenzo named his mother simply as Ines de Valdes, which offers no clue as to whether Ines was a Rodriguez or a Menendez. However, the "de Valdes" in Inez's name does offer a possible connection of Inez with Francisca Menendez de Valdes.

Surnames are frequently abbreviated in documents of that era. For example, the scribe might write "Rdz" for Rodriguez and "Mdz" for Menendez, Melendez, or Mendez. Our own transcription (thanks to Jose Jaime Longoria) of the 1603 Expediente granting passage to Nueva España to Lorenzo Suarez de Longoria found that Inez's surname was abbreviated as either "Mez" or "Ndz". After again reviewing the original document we could not identify any mention of the surname Rodriguez anywhere in the document. Though the document is very difficult to read, I believe that the "Mez" or "Ndz" is more likely an abbreviation for Menendez than it is for Rodriguez. It is my belief that the correct surname for Inez should be Menendez; it was the name of a family well established in the area at the time. Francisca MENENDEZ DE VALDES (aka Francisca Melendez)²⁴³⁴ was born (date unknown). In November 1593, during his testimony in a criminal lawsuit, Alonso de la Pontiga referred to Francisca Menendez de Valdes as his "stepmother".

Juan Uria Maqua, in his book "Alonso de Bello", describes a complicated transaction concluded in 1619 in which Alonso de Bello acquired various properties, including the Casa de Longoria in the village of Llongoria, from Alvaro Menendez de Miranda, who had inherited them from his sister Francisca Menendez. I believe this Francisca Menendez is the same person as Francisca Menendez de Valdes.

Documents discovered in the Real Audiencia y Chancelleria de Valladolid by Matthew Hovious, researcher for the PBS documentary "Faces of America, relate to a criminal lawsuit in 1593 and a civil lawsuit in 1598 involving a plot of land owned by Francisca Menendez de Valdes. Alonso de la Pontiga testified during those trials that the disputed plot of land had been given to Francisca Menendez de Valdes in repayment of her dowry after she was widowed from Pedro de Longoria. It seems to me that other properties likely were deeded to Francisca in repayment of her dowry, including the Casa de Longoria in Llongoria.

The facts, circumstantial though they may be, seem to establish that the Francisca Menendez mentioned by Juan Uria Maqua in his book is the same person as Francisca Menendez de Valdes, widow of Pedro de Longoria.
