Juan Nepomuceno CORTINA^{956,1098,1099} was born on 16 May 1824 in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He died on 30 October 1894 at the age of 70 in Atzcapozalco, Mexico. He was buried at El Panteon de Dolores in Mexico City, Mexico. Juan Nepomuceno Cortina was the man behind what came to be known as the "Cortina Wars" in South Texas. He was a hero to some but a villain to others. One of the things that shaped Cortina was his belief that much of the land acquisitions by land developers and large ranch owners in South Texas, including lands acquired from his ancestors' Potrero de Espiritu Santo land grant, had been unfairly acquired from the rightful owners. His belief was based in part on his own family's experience. In 1848, Cortina's family had filed a lawsuit against Charles Stillman and the Brownsville Town Company to recover and clear title to their lands which they believed had been conveyed to Stillman by holders of faulty titles. The family's title to the lands was upheld by the courts and the land was valued at $241,000. However, within three months, Stillman's lawyers somehow managed to purchase the land for only $33,000, or less than 15% of the appraised value. The lawyers then sold the tracts to Stillman. Ana Maria CUELLAR^1108,1109 was the Original Grantee of Porcion 6 (Revilla) in Zapata County, Texas in 1784. By order of Governor Diego de Lazaga, Ana Maria Cuellar was granted Porcion 6 in 1784. This was not one of the original porciones but was one of six porciones laid out after it was discovered that considerable vacant land with river frontage existed upriver from Revilla. That land, between Porcion 38 and the Jose Vasquez Borrego grant to the north, had not been assigned in 1767 because it was considered too dangerous due to frequent Indian attacks. The six new porciones were designated Porciones 1 thru 6 and finally distributed in 1784. Porcion 6 contained 9,803.11 acres and is in present-day Zapata County, Texas. The land grant is carried under the name of Ana Maria's first husband, Jose Miguel de Alegria Lascana. Note that there is also another porcion designated as Porcion 6 on the west bank of the Rio Grande, that porcion being one of the original porciones.
