Juan Bautista CHAPA was born before November 16, 1627 in Albisola, Genoa, Italy. This is the baptism date. He was baptized on November 16, 1627 in Albisola, Genoa, Italy. Albisola is on the coast near Genoa, Italy. He signed a will on February 8, 1694 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, New Spain. He named as Executors his sons Joseph and Gaspar. However, Gaspar died on the same day Juan Bautista drew up his will. Naming Gaspar as a Co-Executor may have been a way for Juan Bautista to honor his dying son. He died on April 20, 1695 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, New Spain. Juan Bautista Chapa arrived in New Spain in 1647. He lived in Mexico City for a few years and arrived in Nuevo Leon around 1650. He became secretary to the village of Caderyta by the year 1652. By 1662, he had become secretary to the Governor of Nuevo Leon, Martin de Zavala, and also served in that role under de Zavala's successors, Governor Leon de Alza and Governor Azcarraga.
Juan Bautista accompanied Alonso de Leon on several of his expeditions into Texas in the late 1600's. Alonso de Leon's mission was to search for and destroy the colony that the French, under La Salle, had reportedly established somewhere on the Texas coast. From the detailed diaries that Juan Bautista kept on the expeditions and from his work as secretary to the governors of Nuevo Leon, he wrote his "Historia de Nuevo Leon". This is the definitive historical work on northern Mexico and south Texas.
However, for almost 300 years, no one knew who had written the "Historia de Nuevo Leon" because Juan Bautista chose to remain anonymous. He did so because he recognized the many difficulties and dangers in writing histories during that era. The incredulity of some and the censure of others would make life very difficult for the author, with many rebukes and criticisms. Juan Bautista used the example of Zoilo, who rebuked and criticized the Greek poet Homer, whom Juan Bautista calls the "Prince of Poets". Thus, the author of this important history became known simply as the "autor anonimo". It was not until 1961 that he was identified as the author through extensive research and analysis by the noted Mexican historian, Israel Cavazos Garza. Agustina de CHARLES died after October 11, 1626. She made her last testament on this date. The October 11, 1626 testament of Agustina de Charles notes that she was the daughter of Bartolome de Charles and Juana Gonzalez, that she was the widow of Juan Perez de los Rios, and that they had had six children -- four of which (Alonso de Charles, Bartolome de Charles, Estevan de los Rios and Pedro de los Rios) were already deceased and two of which (Ana Perez and Juan Perez de los Rios) were still living. Parents: Bartolome de CHARLES and Juana GONZALEZ.

Bartolome de CHARLES.

Spouse: Juana GONZALEZ. Bartolome de CHARLES and Juana GONZALEZ were married. Bartolome de Charles and Juana Gonzalez were citizens of the Pueblo de los Angeles. Children were: Agustina de CHARLES.

Bartolome de CHARLES died before September 4, 1626. He died before October 11, 1626. He went with his parents to New Mexico in 1590 as part of the group led by Gaspar Castano de Sosa which attempted to illegally settle New Mexico.

I am assuming this is the same Bartolome de Charles who married Leonor de la Cruz. The October 11, 1626 testament of Agustina de Charles notes that she was the daughter of Bartolome de Charles and Juana Gonzalez, that she was the widow of Juan Perez de los Rios, and that among their children had been a son named Bartolome de Charles who was already deceased and another son named Juan Perez de los Rios who was still alive. Agustina's living son was undoubtedly the same Juan Perez de los Rios noted in the September 4, 1626 Census of the Villa of Cerralvo (Monterrey) as having a house in which he lived with his wife, mother and widowed sister and that he also had a jacal in which lived Leonor, "widowed Indian" of Bartolome de Charles. My guess is that Leonor's deceased husband Bartolome de Charles was the son of Juan Perez de los Rios and Agustina de Charles. Further research is needed to prove this but I have nevertheless decided to incorporate this assumed relationship into my database until my assumption is proved incorrect.

Marriage Investigation #39-1 notes that the wife of Juan Perez de los Rios was named Agustina de Belmar (Mermal) and that Juan Perez de los Rios was a brother of Bartolome de Charles, husband of Leonor de la Cruz. Thus it seems quite probable that Juan Perez de los Rios and Bartolome de Charles were two of the sons mentioned in the last Testament of Agustina de Charles, widow of Juan Perez de los Rios.

A significant complication is that Marriage Investigation #39-1 notes that several witnesses stated that Leonor de la Cruz was the wife of Juan Perez de los Rios. I believe this is a reference to the younger, still living Juan Perez de los Rios, husband of Agustina de Belmar (or Mermal), but I leave it to others to discern the implications of these witnesses' statement.
